Established in the year 2006, Chanakya National Law University Patna was founded under the Chanakya National Law University, Patna Act 2006 (Bihar Act No. 24 of 2006). CNLU Patna is also recognised as an "Institute of National Importance". Courses at CNLU Patna include BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), LLM, LLD, and Ph.D programmes.
Chanakya National Law University Patna programmes are offered in the stream of Law and Mass Communication. Admission to CNLU Patna programmes are based on the CLAT/CLAT PG/UGC NET examination. CNLU Patna has a unique placement cell that handles all the placement activities on campus.

BA LLB Hons
- There will be no upper age limit for UG Programme in CLAT.
- As regards minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2 or an equivalent examination), the candidates must have secured:
- Forty five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories
- Forty Percent (40%) marks or equivalent in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
- Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April, are also eligible to appear in CLAT examination. However, they shall be required to produce an evidence of their passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.
- The result of the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2) shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of admission failing which the candidate shall be ineligible for admission to the Course.
- In case of equal marks, the break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order as under:
- Higher marks in the component / section on legal aptitude in the CLAT exam;
- Higher age;
- Computerised draw of lots.
BBA LLB Hons

Candidates who passed (a)Master Degree from a recognized University in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks or 50% marks in case of reserved candidates in the aggregate and passed by securing a minimum of 50% marks in the Aggregate in the Ph. D. entrance test conducted by the University shall be eligible for Enrolment in the Ph.D. Programme. Mere appearance at Entrance does not guarantee admission.
An applicant seeking admission to full/part time Ph.D. Degree Programme shall have:
- A Master’s Degree in Law from any recognised University having scored a minimum of 55% marks in the aggregate.
- With a view to encourage interdisciplinary studies and research with strong legal component, the CNLU encourages candidates from other disciplines also to register for
Ph.D. Part Time Programme. Such candidates must have :
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent degree or diploma in any subject relevant to the field of research with a Bachelor’s Degree in law;
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent degree or diploma in any subject relevant to the research with established research credentials by way of publications;
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent degree or diploma in any subject relevant to the research with long-term in-depth practical experience in the area to be researched;
- M. Phil degree or equivalent degree or diploma in the relevant subject with excellent academic background.
Ph.D Law
Candidates who passed (a)Master Degree from a recognized University in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks or 50% marks in case of reserved candidates in the aggregate and passed by securing a minimum of 50% marks in the Aggregate in the Ph. LLM
a) A candidate for admission to LL.M. course should have passed an Undergraduate Degree in Law (i.e. 3 Years LL.B./Five Years Integrated LL.B. (Hons.) / any other equivalent degree with the following Marks or Equivalent Grade:
i. Fifty Five percent (55%) marks in the aggregate of the maximum marks prescribed in the case of candidates belonging to Unreserved / OBC / Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories, and
ii. Fifty percent (50%) marks in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category,
b) The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying degree on the date of the entrance test. However, the candidate who appeared in the qualifying examination must submit final result on the date and at the time of admission.
LLD
- Persons holding Ph.D. degree in Law with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Teaching/ Research in Law after obtaining Ph.D. in Law.
- Persons having exceptional academic achievements in the field of law or interdisciplinary areas subjects having interface with law are eligible to apply. The dissertation/thesis submitted may be considered for the award of LL.D. Degree provided it is recommended by the competent authorities constituted for this purpose as an original and outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of law and other allied disciplines.
Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights
The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying degree on the date of the entrance test. However, the candidate who appeared in the qualifying examination must submit final result on the date and at the time of admission.
Post Graduate Diploma in Cyber Law
The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying degree on the date of the entrance test. However, the candidate who appeared in the qualifying examination must submit final result on the date and at the time of admission.
Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law
The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying degree on the date of the entrance test. However, the candidate who appeared in the qualifying examination must submit final result on the date and at the time of admission.
Post Graduate Diploma in Corporate Philanthropy and Social Responsibility
The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying degree on the date of the entrance test. However, the candidate who appeared in the qualifying examination must submit final result on the date and at the time of admission.
