The university was established in 2010 by the State Government Act. It is a government-owned university. The campus of the university is spread over an area of 2 acres of land. Himachal Pradesh Technical University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The mission and vision of Himachal Pradesh Technical University is to promote research-based technical education for global understanding and national development.
