Nalanda University was established in 2010 and is recognised as an "Institute of National Importance". Nalanda University offers postgraduate and doctoral courses including M.Sc, MA Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religions, MA Historical Studies, MBA, PGD and Ph.D programmes.
The School of Buddhist Studies, the School of Philosophy and Comparative Religions, the School of Ecology and Environment Studies, the School of Historical Studies, the School of Language and Literature/Humanities and the School of Management Studies are the five academic divisions of Nalanda University. Admissions to Nalanda University is based on the entrance exams CAT/XAT/MAT.
Memorandums of understanding (MOUs) have been signed with Nalanda University by a number of universities and organisations, including the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt (Germany), the Borlaug Institute of South Asia (BISA, India), the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore), Peking University (China), the Bihar Heritage Development Society (India) and others.

MA Historical Studies
Indian and International Students
A minimum criteria for Indian and International students is 55% or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) in Under Graduate Degree from any stream i.e. Humanities/Sciences/Engineering/Management/Law etc.
The international applicants shall present the score of any one of the following English Language Tests/ or proof of knowledge of English:
- TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language)
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- Any other standard English test used on international platform
- or the candidate must have completed a full-time degree-level course entirely taught and assessed in English
MA Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religions
Indian and International Students
A minimum criteria for Indian and International students is 55% or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) in Under Graduate Degree from any stream i.e. Humanities/Sciences/Engineering/Management/Law etc.
The international applicants shall present the score of any one of the following English Language Tests/ or proof of knowledge of English:

- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Post Graduate Diploma in Japanese
A minimum of three years Bachelor’s degree (10+2+3) in the relevant language or degree in any subject with demonstrated evidence of linguistic proficiency equivalent to the Bachelor’s degree.
The University requires all applicants to demonstrate competence in English language.
Post Graduate Diploma in Korean
A minimum of three years Bachelor’s degree (10+2+3) in the relevant language or degree in any subject with demonstrated evidence of linguistic proficiency equivalent to the Bachelor’s degree.

Ph.D Historical Studies
- Applicant should have a Master’s degree with at least 65% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA), preferably with dissertation at Masters’ level or M.Phil. Degree with 65% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
- Applicant to submit a Letter of Self Introduction, and 2 Letters of Recommendation/ References.
- Applicant to submit a Statement of Purpose (SoP) (The SoP should clearly state the reason for opting the course/program and choosing Nalanda University)
- Applicant to submit a detailed Research Proposal (which will be put through plagiarism check)
- Applicant to submit evidence of any research such as writing samples or published papers (at least 2 to 3).
International applicants have to submit a language proficiency proof such as:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- Any other standard English test on an international platform

MBA Sustainable Development and Management
