Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala was established under the Punjab Act of 2006. The state university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is also approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI). RGNUL Patiala has been accredited with a grade of ‘A’ by NAAC.
The courses at RGNUL Patiala include BA LLB Hons, LLM and Ph.D Law. Candidates willing to be admitted to these courses at RGNUL Patiala must eligibility criteria and appear for the entrance examination. Admission to BA LLB (Hons.) course is based on scores of the CLAT Exam. For admission to Lthe LM course at NLU Patiala, candidates are required to appear in CLAT PG.
Candidates who meet the cutoff requirements are required to appear for the CLAT counselling process and select RGNUL Patiala as their preference. However, the RGNUL Patiala PhD admission is based on the entrance test conducted by the university. RGNUL Patiala also offers financial support to deserving students through various scholarships. The placement cell of RGNUL Patiala provides career counselling and other facilities for students to get placed in top organisations.

BA LLB Hons
- The candidate must have passed 10+2 examination of the Punjab School Education Board or its equivalent with minimum 45% marks in the aggregate (40% marks for SC/ST).
- The age of the candidate must not be more than 20 years in case of General and 22 years in case of the SC/ST and PWD Candidates.
LLM
- The candidates must have the minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination [i.e. LL.B./Five-Year Integrated LL.B. (Hons.)/any other equivalent exams] as under:
- Fifty-five percent (55%) marks in case of candidates belonging to Unreserved/OBC/Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories, and Fifty percent (50%) marks in case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) categories.
Ph.D Law
Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
