West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, also known as WBUAFS, was established in 1995 and is one of the state universities situated at Kolkata, West Bengal. Initially a veterinary college, WBUAFS nowadays offers undergraduate courses in veterinary, animal and fishery sciences, This has paid dividends as the University ranked noteworthy 28th in the recently released NIRF 2024 ranking under agriculture category. The CUI considers an 84.536-acre campus with a total enrolment of 1,121 students; 76% of students placed into undergraduate studies, while 24% are into postgraduate studies. WBUAFS teaches 75 courses in 8 degrees The student database is a mixture of the male and female; 84% male and the rest are female students. The institute is blessed with quality 103faculties to ensure quality education and research to the intending candidate.
WBUAFS offers a number of amenities for its educational setting. The university has established and maintains a central library in its compound, which contains an array of information materials for academic use. Sophisticated laboratories exist in virtually all departments to allow exercises and research practices. The campus has the provision of sports, gymnasium and an auditorium where students, extracurricular activities as well as other events are carried out. A health centre, including first aid centre, caters for the medical needs of students. The university also has provided access to internet connection, segregated hostels for male and female students and a restaurant which makes students comfortable in their activities at the university.
The academic programmes of the university are wide and the facilities provided for these programmes are adequate. At present, WBUAFS offers seventy-five programmes through out the levels of undergrad, postgrad, and doctoral courses. It starts with full-time and part-time courses and it also offers online courses for the students as per their preference. Some of the programmes we offer are B.V.Sc. and Animal Husbandry, B.Tech. in Dairy Technology, B.F.Sc. (Bachelor of Fishery Science), and various M.V.Sc., M.F.Sc, and Ph.D. The total approved intake for the undergraduate courses is 218: B.VS.C and Animal Husbandry (100); B.Tech. Dairy Technology (44); B.F.Sc. (44); and Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy (30).
As mentioned earlier, the admission criteria for WBUAFS differs from one programme to the next. For B.V.Sc. and Animal Husbandry 100%, admission is based on scores obtained out of 500 in NEET-UG conducted by NTA. B.Tech Dairy Technology results are earned through the merit obtained in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, commonly abbreviated as WBJEE. Admission to B.F.Sc. is strictly on the basis of marks secured in the higher secondary or any other examinations considered equivalent thereto.
Master courses and doctorate admissions include academic achievement scores, written examinations, and interviewing. Some of the universities also accept candidates selected through ICAR All India Examinations for some of their offered programmes. WBUAFS has a proper selection procedure; worthy students from all sections are benefitted to carry on their desired discipline in animal and fishery sciences.
