The Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, started in the year 2005 is the constituent premier institution for imparting legal education to the north-eastern zone of India. Sited at the beautiful capital city of Meghalaya, this co-educational department presents several law courses for the top-notch legal practitioners. The department has been approved by Bar Council of India and consists of seven talented faculty members who devote themselves for grooming the future legal professionals. The Department of Law at NEHU has garnered such importance due to its focus on quality education and as a result of its positioning as an important site for legal learning across the region.
Students in the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, use a variety of facilities to improve their learning procedures. There is a recording library in the department and of course students have access to a vast number of legal materials. One of the features of the department is an Moot Court which is an opportunity for the students to prepare for courtroom work and cases. Most of the students in Bijni Complex and Umshing campus benefit from the health centers in the university as patients attend the center for treatment and are treated with the required medicine free of charge. For those that need boarding facilities, Male Hostel and Female Hostel named after Thadlaskein Lake of Jaintia Hills have been provided to meet the students’ comfortable accommodation needs. It also has access to a strong IT infrastructure, sporting facilities and guest houses within the university environment making a holistic experience of the campus.
Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, also provides three extensive courses relevant to the levels of creating legal experiences for learners; These are a five-year integrated programme of BA LLB (Hons) programme, two years LLM programme for the post graduate students and doctoral programme in Law for the scholars. The flagship of the department, the BA LLB (Hons) programme has an approved capacity of 60 students and the LLM programme has a capacity of 10 students. These programmes are meant to equip students with principles of legal research and practice and ready them for practice in disparate legal fields.
The admission process of the Department of Law of NEHU is formulated in a way to admit the most suitable candidate for its programmes. The BA LLB (Hons) programme is also the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG based and provides equal opportunity for the students. This nationwide test that admits students, especially, to the universities of the country checks a candidate’s ability and knowledge in respective academic fields.

BA LLB Hons
A candidate who has passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or its equivalent with not less than 50% marks in aggregate for General and 45% for SC/ST from a recognized University/Board is eligible to apply for this course.
LLM
- Candidates must have a three-year LLB degree or a three-year integrated LLB degree if equivalent LLB degree from a recognized University.
- Candidates must have obtained at least 55% marks in aggregate of the qualifying degree examination.
- For candidates of the SC/ST category, a relaxation of 5% marks is provided i.e. they need to have 50% marks in the qualifying LLB degree exam.
Ph.D Law
Master’s Degree holders satisfying the criteria stipulated under Clause 2 above.
- Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated program. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
- A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. program of the same Institution.
- Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized, or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program.
