The Programme in the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Ernakulam, Kerala, is a premier institution for the study of polymers and rubber technology. This constituent department of CUSAT has been imparting polymer education and carrying out research activities for more than five decades since its establishment in 1971. In addition to full-time programmes, the department also delivers undergraduate degree in B.Tech, Masters degree in M.Tech, and Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering in the relevant stream of engineering. A summary of the Annual Administrative Report of the Department reflects adequate faculty resources and quality student enrolment, thanks to a small faculty strength of 7 members teaching in the department. Being accredited from All India Council for Technical Education [AICTE] the sophistication of the department is visible in the course it offers and the research it undertakes.
The Lab facilities available for students of the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology include the following. The department has its own modern library with the stock of more than 3,500 books including textbooks, journals and research theses, which forms a supportive base for academic and research operations. Besides, to provide a wider range of knowledge, students are free to read online journals. The department also has comfortable hostel facilities for boys and girls in order to create a suitable atmosphere towards learning and character transformation. Other amenities include a computerised information technology and communications system, an exercise/n Workout room and a canteen for feeding and soft drinks. It also has a health section and a clinic, which serves students by offering first aid in cases of emergencies, amongst its responsibilities.
The department is well equipped with 12 courses it offers for its students, it has a 4-year B.Tech course Polymer Science and Technology with 20 student intake and two years Master of technology with 10 student intake. For the research minded students there are many Ph.D. offerings of the department in various specific fields including Polymer Nano-composites, Conducting Polymers, Adhesives and Coatings, and Bio-materials for Tissue Engineering and Drug Delivery Applications. These are full-time programmes intended to prepare students for an advanced professional practice in their areas of specialisation.
The B.Tech admissions are based on the entrance examination named as CUSAT CAT which is conducted in Cochin University of Science and Technology in the months of April or may. This entrance tests usually begins its registration in the December or in the early Januarys. For the M.Tech programme, admission is granted normally on the basis of the performance in GATE examination.
