The Government College for Arts, Chandigarh, was started in 1951 as a premier institution for the fostering of active artistic talent. Spread over 10 acres in Sector 10 C, the location of the co-educational college is just behind the Government Museum and Art Gallery. It has a total student strength of 337, with a faculty strength of 23, in a wide range of 10 courses under 3 degree programmes.

In the undergraduate section, the college offers Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Applied Art, Graphics, Sculpture, and Painting courses and admits 15 students to each of them. In the postgraduate section, the college offers Master of Fine Arts (MFA) courses in Sculpture, Applied Art, Painting, and Graphics. There are also unique programmes under this in a Diploma in Fine Arts for Divyang students, as well as in the Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts for Divyang, where both programmes take in 4 students in each intake.
