Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram is among the oldest institutions of Women’s education in Kerala as it was started in 1864. Constituted in the educational capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, this renowned women’s college has been building the future of girl students for over a hundred and fifty years. It earned the affiliation of the University of Kerala and got accredited by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). Situated on a 10.64 hectares land the institution provides 40 programmes in eight degree courses .The institution occupies an area of 64 acres. This college currently operates with a total enrolment of 2737 students and a faculty of 160 in proportion to students, this imply that the College has a good student/teacher ratio. At present it hosts only female students and among them 73% are in undergraduate level and 27% are in postgraduate level.
Government College for Women boasts of modern facility to support the colleges academic activities. The library of the college was set up in 1897 and it has become one among the oldest college library in Kerala with a rich collection of books as well as periodicals of around 93500. From being run manually with traditional systems, the libraries are now using modern library software to make it fully automated for students to gain vast knowledge. Government College for Women also provides well-endored laboratory for practical, auditorium for importing event and seminar and place for sports activities to enable student to exercise. Play facilities include a gymnasium, cafeteria and a number of clubs for personality development. Substantial emphasis is placed on IT to ensure that institutions of education meet high levels of technological development as expressed below.
This college, Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram has a diverse courses offer in different faculties. The college offers 40 of programmes, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level;-B.Sc Home Science ,B.Sc Chemistry ,B.Sc Mathematics, BA History and B.Com etc. All programmes are day-time and full-time, traditional and innovative, thus meeting the needs of various learners. The undergraduate degrees take three years to complete while the post graduate courses normally take two years to complete.

B.Com
A person, who have passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
M.Com
A candidate who has passed a Bachelor degree of 3 years duration (B.Com. or equivalent) under 10+2+3 pattern from any recognized university.
BA Economics
A person, who have passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
Ph.D Chemistry
- Master’s Degree holders satisfying the criteria stipulated under Clause 2 above.
- Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
- A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the same Institution.
- Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.
Ph.D Economics
