Institute of Aerospace Medicine or IAM came into existence in 1957 and is located in Vimanapura, Karnataka. It is one of the most prominent institutes in the field of aviation medicine throughout the world. This affiliated college, over an area of 30 acres, is particularly designed and developed for the streamline field of aviation medicine. NAAC accredited, IAM approved by NMC is committed to becoming a flagship institution for aerospace medical education in the world. It has a total of 26 students and a faculties of which 29 members and offers a one of its kind MD programme in Aviation Medicine annually admitting 10 student enrolments.
The needed academic and research facilities necessary for IAM are available in the form of modern facilites. The institute has a good library and students are exposed to a rich reading materials and journals in aerospace medicine. High tech laboratories are available to meet the individual requirements of aviation medical research and training. An auditorium is designed to accommodate formal academic activities such a seminars to encourage healthy intellectual discourse. There is also a cafeteria at the campus. Physical needs are met with first aid provision that is provided by an on-campus health facility; an excellent gym answers to the need for physical health. Sports facilities are also availed to allow students’ to balance their time in between books and fitness. The concern with technology is well illustrated in this institute’s sound IT bases improving the advanced scholarly work and instruction in aerospace medicine.
Institute of Aerospace Medicine has a postgraduate specialised programme, MD in Aviation Medicine. This is a three-year, full-time course designed to equip students with adequate understanding and experience of this specialised area. The purpose of the programme is to train professionals who would effectively solve the medical issues concerning to aviation and aerospace industry.
Like most aviation medicine programmes, the one at IAM for the MD Aviation Medicine is competitive because of the nature of the course. The admission requirements demand that prospective students should have good background knowledge in medical sciences and should have passion on the aerospace area.
