IOP Bhubaneswar was established in 1972 by the authorities of the Odisha state and still receives financial support from both the DAE and the Odisha government. IOP Bhubaneswar has an active research program that focuses on a variety of fields such as theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, theoretical high energy physics and string theory, theoretical nuclear physics, ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and cosmology, quantum information, and experimental high energy nuclear physics. IOP Bhubaneswar’s experimental facilities consist of a 3MV Pelletron accelerator and a low-energy implanter, which are being utilised for research in low-energy nuclear physics, ion beam interactions, surface modification, and analysis, trace elemental analysis, materials characterization, and radiocarbon dating studies. One of the major areas of research at the Institute is in the domain of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology with a particular focus on surface and interface studies.
IOP Bhubaneswar has several advanced facilities for sample preparation and the study of various physical and chemical properties of nanostructures and bulk condensed matter systems. IOP Bhubaneswar is actively engaged in international collaborations with top research laboratories such as CERN (Switzerland), BNL (USA), ANL (USA), GSI (Germany), and others. Additionally, the Institute is also involved in various research activities related to India-based Neutrino observatory. IOP Bhubaneswar offers a Ph.D. program in Physics, and selected students are required to complete a one-year coursework at the IOP Bhubaneswar. Candidates for the doctoral programme at IOP Bhubaneswar are selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), and those with high CSIR-NET or GATE scores are eligible for admission as well.
