Loreto College is a women’s college established in 1912. Loreto College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and recognised by the University Grants Commission.  Loreto College was the first college in West Bengal to be assessed by NAAC. Loreto College was ranked 75th in the college category by the NIRF, Ministry of Human Resource Development Govt of India in 2020. Presently, there are around 1000 students in Loreto College, Kolkata.

Loreto College is spread over an area of 3 acres. The College has a self-financing Computer Centre and it aims to generate computer literacy and skill in all students. The Loreto College library is digitised and computerized and has a huge collection of academic books and journals. An internet facility is available for both students and staff members of the college. There are several extracurricular activities nurtured by Loreto College, through several societies like Dramatics, Debating, Literary and Leadership, and training society. A women’s cell in the college was formed in 1996 and the motive of the women’s cell is to provide literacy programs to disadvantaged young women there in the college. Loreto College also hosts an annual inter-collegiate fest known as ‘SAMAGAM’. 

 Loreto College offers different UG level courses in  B.A (Hons.) Education, B.A (Hons.) English, B.A (Hons.) History, B.A (Hons.) Political Science, B.Sc (Hons.) Economics, B.Sc (Hons.) Geography, B.Sc (Hons.) Psychology, B.A (Hons.) Psychology, B.Sc and B.A. Loreto College PG level courses are M.A in English and B.Ed. It follows the CBCS course presented by the University of Calcutta.

The B.Ed department of Loreto College was founded in 1913, is recognised by the NCTE, and was awarded the ‘B++’ grade by NAAC in 2003.

Loreto College is located in William Jones Sarani, Kolkata and the nearest metro station to the college is Maidan Metro Station. The distance between the Maiden Metro Station and Loreto College is around 1 km and students can easily reach the campus after getting down from the metro. From the Park Street Bus Stand, it takes around 5 minutes to reach the college. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is located 10km away from Loreto College. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the campus from the airport.   

Loreto College Accreditations, Ranking and Collaborations

• Loreto College, Kolkata was the first college in West Bengal to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Later, the college was re-accredited by NAAC in December 2006 and was awarded an A grade. Again in 2012 Loreto College had the 3rd cycle of re-accreditation by NAAC in which the college was awarded an A grade. In 2006 and 2011 the UGC recognised Loreto College as a college with Potential for Excellence.

Alumni of Loreto College

The Loreto College Alumni Association (LCAA) was registered as a society in 2000 to consolidate the contribution of former students and nurture the bond between Loreto College and its alumni. The LCCA donates prizes to encourage meritorious scholars and grants scholarships and stipends to deserving students in Loreto College. 

Loreto College Alumni members are invited to the college to attend the College Open Day where the alma mater can interact with the current students to strengthen their bonds.

Clubs, Committees, and Societies in Loreto College

AICUF Club- The AICUF club aims to enable students to develop critical awareness, to investigate social injustice. This club motivates students to involve themselves in activities related to broad social issues and struggles.  

Debating Society- The debating society holds training sessions and workshops for its members and is responsible for the debate events conducted both at intra-college and inter-college levels.

Games Society- The Games Society of Loreto College conducts several game events during SAMAGAM, including Basketball, Table tennis, and Carrom matches. 

Dramatics Society- The society aims to develop the creative skills of the students through different activities like drama, theatre. 

Western Cultural Society- This society provides a platform for talented musicians, dancers, and singers in the college.

Eastern Cultural Society - The members of this society learn different forms of Indian music, dance, and other activities.

Literary Club - The objective of this club is to encourage the literary talent of the students and enhance their creativity skills.

Loreto College Infrastructure and Facilities

Loreto College is well equipped with facilities and infrastructure and ensures the overall development of the students. Loreto College facilities include a library, auditorium, geography laboratory, computer lab, gym, canteen, water cooler, medical and hostel facilities. Loreto College facilities include a playground for the girls to play games like basketball, throwball, badminton, and rowing. Loreto College includes medical facilities for students, a nurse is available on the campus for medical emergencies. Loreto College canteen offers healthy, nutritious, and hygienic food, and female students were found all hours enjoying and interacting with other students.

The college is well equipped with gymnasiums with various sporting facilities for the recreation of the students. Loreto College facilities include computer labs for computer literacy, skill enhancement, and proficiency to the female students of the college. Other facilities include a common room for girls, well-equipped laboratories and well-maintained classrooms are there in the college. The hostel is also available on the campus with hygienic food at an affordable price. Loreto College includes a reading room for female students.

Loreto College offers different PG and UG level courses. The UG courses include B.A (Hons.) English, B.A (Hons.) History, B.A (Hons.) Political Science, B.Sc (Hons.) Geography, B.Sc (Hons.) Psychology, B.A (Hons.) Psychology, B.Sc, B.Sc (Hons.) Economics, B.A, and B.A (Hons.) Education. The PG course includes only M.A English. Loreto College also offers a B.Ed programme.

Loreto College Admissions

Loreto College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and offers admissions to different UG level courses through merit. Loreto College admission to PG courses is based on the merit of the qualifying exam and marks secured in the entrance test conducted by Calcutta University. Loreto College admission to the BEd programme is based on the marks secured in written examination and performance in the interview conducted by Loreto College.

Admission to the PG level courses in Loreto College is offered via two channels - merit and entrance based. As per the Loreto College admission procedure for the PG course, 60% of seats are based on the merit of the qualifying exam, while the rest 40% of seats are offered to the candidates based on the marks secured in the entrance test.

Meanwhile, admission to the B.Ed programme is based on the merit and performance of the written examination followed by an interview conducted by Loreto College itself.

Loreto College UG Admission Process

Loreto College UG admission procedure starts after the declaration of results by the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Examination. Female students from all boards are eligible to apply for admission. The steps for applying to Loreto College UG admissions are as follows-

• Aspiring applicants are required to register online for the UG admission on the official website of Loreto College, Kolkata

• Login to the website, fill and submit the application form for UG admission.

• Applicants are required to fill out the application form with all required documents and fee payment.

• The final selection of candidates is done based on merit or marks obtained in the qualifying exam and after successful document verification and fee payment.

Loreto College PG Admission Process (merit & entrance)

Loreto College PG admission procedure starts after the declaration of graduation result by the University of Calcutta. The female students graduating from a recognised university with minimum qualifying marks are eligible to apply for Loreto College PG admissions. The steps for applying to Loreto College PG admissions are as follows -

• Aspiring candidates for Loreto College PG admission have to register online on the official website of Loreto College for the entrance exam, and for the merit-based admission candidate has to meet the required eligibility.

• It is to be noted that 60% of seats are on a merit basis and the other 40% of seats will be filled through the entrance exam conducted by the Calcutta University.  

• Final selection is based on the marks secured in the 12th board exam or the marks obtained in the entrance exam conducted by Calcutta University.

• For admission through entrance mode, candidates have to furrtehr participate in the counseling process including document verification and fee payment.

•  Final admission is offered to the student after document verification and fee payment.

Loreto College B.Ed Programme Admission Process

• Candidates aspiring admission to the B.Ed programme have to apply online on the official website of the Loreto College

• Candidates need to take an admission test conducted by Loreto College.

• After qualifying to the Loreto College admission test then the next round is followed by an interview which is conducted by the authorities of the Loreto College.

• Final admission is done based on performance in the written exam and interview conducted by the college, after the verification of documents and fee payments.

Loreto College Scholarships

Loreto College Scholarships are given to the meritorious students of the College. The Scholarships offered in Loreto College are - The Satyawati Memorial Scholarship, the Anita Bhatia Scholarship, the Michelle Lobo Scholarship, and the Enid La Fond medal and scholarship. Loreto College students can also avail the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship which is introduced by the government of West Bengal.

The Government of West Bengal also offers scholarships to the students residing in West Bengal. Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship is introduced by the Govt of West Bengal at different levels of higher studies to the institutions based in West Bengal.  

Loreto College Cut off

Loreto College cut off is prepared based on marks obtained in the previous qualifying exam. Loreto College UG cut off is prepared based on the marks obtained in the 12th board exam. For admission in UG courses, Loreto College cut off is prepared based on the best four marks of the student in the 12th board examination from a recognised board.
