Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute is a post graduate dental institute, was established in the year 1990 in the union territory of Puducherry in India. This government affiliated institute recognised by the Dental Council of India (DCI) is having the faculties of BDS and MDS courses. The MGPGI Pondicherry has secured a good ranking of 35 with more emphasis on improvement in NIRF 2024 ranking in Dental colleges. Set in an 11.17 acre space it admits 232 students in total and has 70 members of faculty. Currently, MGPGI provides the students 8 courses in 2 levels of the degree programme focusing on several fields of dentistry.
Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute has made and offer various services for the comfort of students in their academic and everyday lives. Facilities include separate hostels for the boy’s and girl’s, to provide the best accommodation to students. First aid is well provided through a health centre with adequate facility to handle students’ emergencies. The star attraction is a centrally air-conditioned library at MGPGI with more than 9,180 books and 950 back volumes of journal in the field of dentistry, medicine, and health sciences. The library is funded an annual sum of Rs. 40 lakhs of which it uses to subscribe to 66 foreign journals and 19 Indian journals. On recreational and health activities, the institute provides sports amenities. There is an up-to-date information technology facility for learning to foster the deployment of advanced learning techniques. There is also a cafeteria to accommodate those people in need of special place for rest and leisure conversation with other people.
MGPGI Pondicherry is offering 8 courses in total, in which some of them are undergraduate and some of them are postgraduate. The largest course for students after fours years secondary education is the BDS, which is an undergraduate course running for 5 academic years. in postgraduate level, the institute offer various Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programmes which are of 3years’ duration. Some of the specialised MDS courses are prosthodontics, oral pathology and microbiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, and conservative dentistry and endodontics, etc. The general student capacity for the courses offered by the institute is 232 and total 110 is for the BDS programme and the rest is for the MDS specialisations.
The admission procedure of the MGPGI Pondicherry is merit based and is very rigid in its process. Enrolment in the BDS programme is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test[NEET] for dental and medical courses aptly named for across the country. Likewise for the MDS programmes, the candidates need to pass their National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for MDS (NEET MDS). They help institute filter out students who are qualified for admission to the institute from a huge crowd. It is a multicultural institute as proved by the students enrolled in the institute. According to the most up to date info 74 % of the students are female and 26% male students are part of the undergraduate programme, 57 % of the students are female while 43% are male students for the postgraduate programmes. 'The higher secondary examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years study, the last two years of study comprising of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics or any other elective subjects with English at a level not less than the core course for English as prescribed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training after the introduction of the 10+2+3 years educational structure as recommended by the National Committee on education;
Note: Where the course content is not as prescribed for 10+2 education structure of the National Committee, the candidates will have to undergo a period of one-year pre- professional training before admission to the dental colleges.

MDS Oral Pathology and Microbiology
A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India registered with the State Dental Council has obtained provisional or permanent registration, and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college.
MDS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India registered with the State Dental Council has obtained provisional or permanent registration, and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college.
