Poompuhar College Melaiyur was started in 1964 and is a Private, Self-Financed College affiliated to Bharathidasan University Tiruchirappalli. Started in 2015 at the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu state of India, the college offers a number of courses recently in the faculties of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Science, Commerce, Computer Application & IT & Education. Eligible for a C.A.C accreditation, Poompuhar College is situated on a 22 acres of land and has a total student enrollment of 2432 and a teaching faculty of 92. The institution offers fifty two courses cutting across 10 programs: the BA, B.Sc, B.Com, MA M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D programs. It caters for both male and female students making it a co-educational institution where the institutions encourages the two sexes to foster admiring respect for each other.
In this regard the Poompuhar College, Melaiyur provides almost all the amenities to supplement the academic and co-curricular activities of the students. The college has a library containing 20,000 books, which is in a process of being automated. There are eight department based laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology,English and communication Skills computer lab. This campus comprises modern classrooms, arts, and culture, smart technologies such as boards and LCD projectors. IT support is commensurate to requirements and students enjoy access to Wi-Fi in all campuses invested across the nation. The college also has a well set playground for recreation and games for interested sports personalities. There are different hostels which accommodate the students within separated gender which will help avails comfortable lodging. The establishment also has an Auditorium to conduct major occasions and seminars among other events.
There is a good number of different fields of study in Poompuhar College to meet different abilities and vocations. This institution offers 52 courses at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate levels. Some of these are three-year full time programs in BA, B.Com and BCA and B.Sc. The college offers the MA, M.Com, M.Phil, M.Sc courses at the postgraduate level which takes two years in general.

B.Com
A person who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
M.Phil Commerce Part Time
Candidates for admission to the M.Phil. program shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
BA Economics
A person,who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
B.Sc Physics
A person who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) with science stream or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
M.Phil Philosophy Religion and Culture Part Time

A candidate who has passed a Bachelor's degree of 3 years duration (B.A. or equivalent) under 10+2+3 pattern from any recognized university.
