State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology or SIHMCT Thuvakkudi is a reputed institution that aims at delivering great lessons in hospitality education. This affiliated college was founded in 1981 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and aims at conveying the rich experience of the tourism industry in the combination of the theory and practice. Situated in a total of 26.57 acres of land, the SIHMCT has been in the business of building the future of hospitality for over 40 years. It has accrued a total student enrolment of 175 students and a special faculty of 2 personnel thus enabling adequate student contact and efficient teaching. Owing to its specialisation of hotel and catering technology, SIHMCT provides 6 programmes of study at two levels of degree.

SIHMCT boasts of infrastructural facilities to make sure a student-oriented environment that is most convenient optimal for learning. The institute has  practical teaching laboratories which provide actual operating environment in the food production and manufacturing lab, bakery lab and housekeeping. The library is serving as a knowledge database which contains different textbooks, reference books and various national and international journals related to the hospitality industry. As a result of the implementation of the programme, the college has developed adequate IT facilities to allow the students access information technology facilities such as computers and internet in the college. It equally has large and well aerated classrooms for theory with equal aspect to the practical sections. The college cafeteria thus provides not only eating facilities but can also present opportunities for performance for students especially those in the chefs’ or food service careers. Recognising the concept of education is not only the acquisition of academic knowledge but also the care of physical health, SIHMCT offers provisions of sports for students. Also, for the hostelers the institute has separate hostels for boys and girls which makes life easy for out station students.

SIHMCT provides a rich and varied number of programmes in academics that cover many sides of the hospitality industry. All together the institute teach 6 courses which include full time degree and diploma courses. The premier offering is the three year full time B.Sc course in Hospitality and Hotel Administration which has an intake of 90 students. For the specific diploma courses, SIHMCT provides following two years programmes in Food Production, Food and Beverage Service, Bakery and Confectionery, House keeping and Front Office. The number of students admitted to these diploma courses varies from 45 to 90, in total 175 across all the programmes. This diverse offer of courses guarantees versatility and student can focus on the subject area of interest and opportunities in the hospitality industry.

The different programmes offered at this institute have different method of admission to the programmes. Admissions are on the basis of candidate’s performance in the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE) and online counselling on all India merit basis arranged by National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Noida and IGNOU New Delhi. For the diploma courses, candidates are offered direct admission based on merit in the admission test in addition to an interview test at the institutional level. This way the institute can control not only the results of the academical years and intelligence but, also the talent and the passion that the candidates have towards this field and the hospitality industry.
