We are in the process of writing a brief history of the Vel’s School of Hotel and Catering Management, Chennai which was set up in the year 1992, as a constituent college of Vels University. Situated in Pallavaram, Chennai this is an institution that focuses on providing hospitality education. The school is located over a large land space of 30 acres, which is important for provision of conducive environment and practical exercises. This institute has faculty members strength of only 11 and it provide 6 courses for three levels in hotel management, catering, and culinary arts. The goal of offering quality education in hospitality sector makes the school favourite among learners, who wish to pursue their career in the area.
Vel’s School of Hotel and Catering Management has a range of amenities which are aimed at improving the student’s experience, … There are also adequate laboratory facilities for practical activity in the field of microbiology and biotechnology to conduct research activities. A large modern built up library with a floor area of 20,000 sq ft has over 134,000 books, 13,055 back volumes and access to over 300 periodicals available and beneficial to the students. It also has well furnished hostel facilities for the two sexes in this college and the air hostels are available.
Practical jocks will surely benefit from vast, well paved tracks for target activities, as well as, elegant provision for indoor and outdoor games, chaperoned by professional directors trained in physical education. For students’ academic activities, the campus is Wi-Fi enabled to help students remain connected. Furthermore, there are Sundry services like; ATM services, college health centre, first aid services, college cafeteria with serviced and healthy foods.
Vel’s School of Hotel and Catering Management at present provides a total of 6 full time courses to cover the gaps in hospitality education of various streams. These comprise lower and higher editions, diploma rate or post graduate classes to ensure the provision of the kind of personnel needed in the hospitality industry of today. There is no specific number of students to be intakes for each of the courses but an aspect of its quality education offering is well evident. The programmes follow the course design where they introduce students to the foundation of hospitality and at the same time offer them real life experience to enhance their prospects of success within the hospitality industry.
