Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College (VMSDC) was set up in 1986 and is one of the leading dental college in Salem, Tamil Nadu. This constituent college, recognised by the Dental Council of India (DCI), has dental programmes that are taught at its 10.14 acre campus. VMSDC has a students’ population of 568 and a faculty population of 126 which produces 12 courses in three degrees. With regard to the composition, female students in the college constitute 72% in undergraduate programmes while 56% in postgraduate programmes. Importantly, only 87% students of the institute are from Tamil Nadu whereas 13% students are from other states which are proofs of the institute’s popularity.
Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College is obligated to make sure it offers the students a good learning environment. The campus provides properly outfitted practical classrooms and laboratories for training and scientific investigations. Cooperating students have the advantage of a vast library collection of articles and other dental related materials, both in print and electronic format. It has separate hostel facilities available for boys as well as girls so as to provide proper accommodation to out station students. The institute gives a variety of dental courses for instance undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma courses. The BDS programme is the largest programme admitting 100 students each year while different MDS programmes have direct admission with numbers varying between 2 and 3 seats depending on the speciality. More so, VMSDC provides diploma courses in Dental Hygienist and Dental Mechanics which take 20 students each. All given courses are complete time that makes it effective and practical to get real experience. Combined, VMSDC has approval capacity of 158 students from first year through to postgraduate year across its courses and contributes to the dental healthcare work force.

When it comes to admission, VMSDC selects few candidates, the admission is partly competitive and partly based on merit. To be considered for BDS programme, the candidates must pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). Similarly, for becoming postgraduate students in the field, one has to qualify NEET MDS examination. There is also a testimony of successful passage of the institution that VMSDC has been producing alumni that are practicing successfully in India as well as foreign countries.

BDS
- To be eligible for admission to the BDS Degree Course, a candidate must have passed in H.S.C.,(or) its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology at the Qualifying Examination as mentioned in Revised BDS Regulations-2007 and in addition must have come in the merit list of NEET for the admission to the BDS Degree Course. In respect of the candidates belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology taken in the qualifying examination (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) must be 40% marks instead of 50%.
- To be eligible for the admission to BDS Degree Course for a particular academic year, it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain a minimum of marks at the 50th percentile in the NEET to BDS Degree Course held for the Concerned academic year. However, in respect of candidates belonging to SC, ST, and OBC, the minimum marks shall be at the 40th percentile and PWD (Persons with Disabilities) at the 45th Percentile.
MDS Oral Medicine and Radiology
- A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognised degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India and registered with the State Dental Council and has obtained provisional or permanent registration and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognised dental college.
MDS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India and registered with the State Dental Council and has obtained provisional or permanent registration, and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college.
MDS Periodontology
- A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India registered with the State Dental Council has obtained provisional or permanent registration, and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college.
MDS Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
- The Candidate must possess a recognized BDS degree (or) equivalent qualification and should have obtained permanent Registration with the Dental Council of India or any State Dental Council and must also have obtained a minimum of marks at the 50th percentile for General Category (in case of SC/ST & OBC category for 40th Percentile) in the NEET-MDS Examination.
- In the Case of a Foreign National, as a medical practitioner in his own country from which he has obtained his basic Dental qualification and his degree is recognized by the corresponding Dental Council or concerned authority with appropriate registering authority in his own country where he/she has obtained his Basic Dental qualification, and his duly recognized by the corresponding Dental Council or concerned authority.
MDS Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
- A candidate for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery course, must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a university or institute in India registered with the State Dental Council has obtained provisional or permanent registration, and has undergone compulsory rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college.
MDS Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry
